Barrow’s Goldeneye

Description: The barrow’s goldeneye is marginally larger than the common goldeneye. It has a wingspan to 76 cm (30 in.) and a length to 48 cm (19 in.). The male barrow’s golden-eye differs from the male common goldeneye by having white crescent-shaped patches in front of its eyes and white barrings on the sides. The female has a darker-brown head.

Traditional use: The duck family (Anatidae) were and still are the most hunted birds in North America. Their meat was highly desired, and the feathers, bones, and fat were all used.

Etymology: The species name islandica means “Iceland.” In Iceland, barrow’s goldeneye is known as húsönd, “house duck.” The common name commemorates Sir John Barrow (1764–1848), a world traveller and an English statesman.

Habitat: Breeds in the Pacific Northwest on ponds, lakes, and streams. Spends the winter along the coastline of bc and Washington.

Viewing: On the water from Second Beach to Lions Gate Bridge. Best seen from autumn to spring.
